<image:caption>“At the base of a banner tree were thousands of spiders sitting in their web. The farmer asked, ‘what is the value of those spiders?’ I guessed, they trap the insects and therefore protect the bananas? ‘Maybe…’ he answered. He didn’t know. ‘None of us know!’ he exalted. ‘All we know is that this tree produces beautiful bananas. Be careful, attempts to understand this tree quickly become attempts to control it.’” It’s sometimes more important to accept and value the mystery of the spiders. Gordon 2023, p.18</image:caption>

<image:caption>Five actions to conserve and regenerate places of value to nature and people. Inside the circle actions conserve biocultural diversity where people and nature still thrive. The principles of transformative change help to expand the circle and transform extractive views, structures, and practices. Challenges to transformation indicate resistance or ‘push back.’ Outside the circle actions shift extractive land-use systems and advance integrated spatial planning towards regenerative views, structures, and practices – also expanding the circle.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I am an environmental social scientist and President of the Australian Institute of Ecological Agriculture [IEA]. My research explores transformation in agricultural systems so that they build resilience, diversity and health in landscapes and communities; rather than retract from them. This is important work to me because it speaks directly to my family’s custodianship of Moffat Falls, a pastoral property located in the lands of the Dunghutti, Gumbaynggirr and Anaiwan Nations.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - My research in regenerative and ecological agricultures</image:title>
<image:caption>My research explores the philosophy, practice, and relational values of regenerative and ecological agricultures. This includes what opportunities they offer for transforming the way we farm in the face of climate change, biodiversity loss and social unrest. I like to use action research and participatory methods, so that action can occur simultaneously with the research. I believe those impacted by research should be included in the process of knowledge generation.</image:caption>

Comprising a diverse membership of both farmers and non-farmers, IEA works with nature and people to take action toward more regenerative agriculture; rebuilding biodiversity, producing healthy food, and supporting stronger communities.</image:caption>
